Chiyoe Takahashi hadn’t seen technician Cassandra’s plight. She hadn’t seen the woman disappear beneath her. Didn’t realize the slip of her `Mech’s right foot had been the end of a life. There was a reason magscan didn’t show any humans who weren’t wearing ceramet body armor or carrying rifles. All Chiyoe knew was that slip of the Mongoose’s foot had carried her too far, her nimble little `Mech had passed behind the enemy Sunfire and around. It wouldn’t stop her from shooting it, but as her medium lasers carved up the heavy `Mech’s side she mentally kicked herself for her sloppy piloting.

Even if she had seen Cassandra, she wouldn’t have shed a tear for the woman’s death. Not even the Concord of Kapteyn could warm her heart to the fate of a non-Capellan. The trained and well-maintained sociopathy of the Death Commandos had long-since inured her to the random deaths people probably didn’t deserve. She hadn’t shed a single tear at the news that her father, badly afflicted with early-onset Alzheimer’s, had been ‘vanished’ by the Maskirovka for stating once too often--or, she quietly suspected, simply once--that maybe, just maybe, the young Chancellor Liao had played some small part in beloved Maximilian Liao’s death. If she’d been consulted first, she would have approved the action on principle.

Life was cheap in the Inner Sphere; and in the Capellan Confederation there was only one life that mattered.
